Miracle Mom Defies Doctors

ATLANTA — Victoria Moon jumps around, waving her arms wildly, laughing in a home video from last October. Her husband and children shout out guesses and finally the right answer to their charades game is yelled out. She claps and jumps up and down.

“Victoria was a vibrant, energetic mom,” her husband Stephen Moon said. “We called her super mom. She did everything for our family.”

Married for 15 years, the Moons have three young children, Max, Sam, and Rosie, ages 7, 4, and two. Just one month after that charades game, Victoria went to a routine doctor’s appointment and fainted in the office. The 42-year-old fractured her skull in the fall and had internal bleeding. After two brain surgeries, she went into a coma.

“We were told it’s probably not likely that she’ll wake up,” Stephen said.

But Stephen refused to give up. “We knew she could hear us. And I knew she was responding to requests that I would make, movement of the hand and leg to eye commands.”

Stephen paid out of his own pocket for Victoria to go to rehab in Chicago. His insurance refused to pay because of her poor prognosis. But in Chicago is where Victoria began to emerge from her coma. Seven weeks after it all began, husband and wife had their first conversation.

“I showed her some photos and she recognized our son and called him by his name, and then I asked her if she knew who I was and she said “husband,” Stephen said.

Victoria’s insurance company reversed its decision and last week she came home to the Shepherd Center where is continuing her rehab. The Moons’ church, Piedmont Church, has raised $20,000 to help with medical bills.

Community Pastor for Piedmont Church, Steve Crowley said, “Victoria is where she is, in my firm belief, because of answered prayers.”

Stephen Moon says it is a miracle. And while she is back, in many ways she’s not… yet.

Stephen sits with Victoria at lunch at Shepherd. He asks her, “Do you remember how old you are?”

She looks at him and answers in a whisper, “26.”

He smiles at her, “Don’t you wish.”

“I know she knows I’m her husband, but some days she says I’m her doctor and her husband,” Stephen said. “There’s a lot of confusion, but we can deal with that in the coming months.”

Stephen stays with Victoria during the day while family and friends take care of their children. Stephen says, “They miss her every night.” As for Victoria’s memories of her children, he says, “There are times throughout the day where she will ask or write one of the children’s names and ask if they’re being taken care of and then later that same day she can’t name our children, or even if we have children.”

Stephen Moon believes a community united in faith altered his wife’s path, bringing her back to the people who love and need her most in the world. “I believe one day it will all come back. It’s been a miracle and an answered prayer,” he said.
