Britain’s Got Talent auditions present another unexpected performance, this time from 19-year-old IT engineer Michael Collings.
As Michael Collings shuffled on stage wearing jogging pants and holding a guitar, few would have guessed that the 19-year-old would end up being dubbed the “next Susan Boyle” and being backed for stardom by Justin Bieber.
Collings, who lives in a caravan in Plymouth, drew scorn from judges Amanda Holden and Michael McIntyre when he walked onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage.
“He looks like he’s going on a long-haul flight,” Holden said.
YouTube sensation … Michael Collings.
“On easyJet,” McIntyre quipped in response.
But just like Susan Boyle did in her audition for the same show in 2009, Collings made the judges eat their words and received a standing ovation for his rendition of Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car. The clip has been watched over a million times on YouTube since it aired on British television on Saturday.
The apprentice IT engineer is now the favourite to win the show. Boyle eventually came second in 2009 but has gone on to sell millions of albums around the world.
Collings said: “I’m prepared for obviously what’s to come, but I’m going to take it day by day and as it comes, so hopefully it will work out fine.”
Global singing sensation Bieber predicted big things for Collings.
“I know we are only one show into the season, but I am guessing he must be a big favourite already,” Bieber told the Sun.
“He really was an amazingly talented guy. I am sure his life will never be the same again.”
Justin – who found fame on YouTube himself – said shows like Britain’s Got Talent were “designed for people like Michael”.
He added: “You’d think, after Susan Boyle, people would be prepared for the unexpected. But I still don’t think anybody expected that.”
